The roots of this theory in the contemporary world must be sought in the Renaissance and the following centuries. John Locke is one of the first philosophers who wrote an independent treatise on this subject. In this treatise, he tries to expound the reasons and causes of necessity of civil ruler's tolerant treatment with different social classes explaining the scope of tolerance and mechanisms to extend it to social life. Expounding the grounds for the appearance of this theory in the Western world, the present paper tries to analyze and criticize its theoretical principles. Giving detailed explanation of these principles does not mean accepting them; rather, it aims at understanding the intellectual backgrounds that encouraged Locke and other theorists of tolerance to present it and promote it. نظریه‌ی تساهل از جمله دستاوردهای نظری مغرب زمین به شمار می رود که بیش از یک دهه است وارد گفتمان سیاسی و فلسفی جریان شبه روشنفکری کشورهای جهان سومی شده است. ریشه های این نظریه در جهان معاصر را باید در دوران موسوم به نوزایی و سده های پس از آن جست. جان لاک از اولین فیلسوفانی است که به نگارش رساله ای مستقل در این باره پرداخته است. وی در این رساله می کوشد ضمن تبیین دلایل و چرایی لزوم برخورد متساهلانه‌ی حاکم مدنی با فرقه های مختلف، دامنه‌ی تساهل و سازوکارهای بسط آن در حیات اجتماعی را تشریح کند. این مقاله درصدد است با تبیین زمینه های مطرح شدن این نظریه در جهان غرب، مبانی نظری این موضوع را نقد و بررسی کند. تفصیل در بیان این مبانی، نه به معنای پذیرش آن، بلکه برای فهم بهتر از پیش زمینه های فکری ای است که لاک و دیگر نظریه پردازان تساهل را بر ارائه و ترویج آن برانگیخته است. https://siyasi.nashriyat.ir/sites/siyasi.nashriyat.ir/files/article-files/6_0.pdf
